The Portulacaria Afra Bonsai (Elephant bush) similar in appearance to the "jade plant" has smaller and rounder pads and more compact growth. It is mainly found in the Eastern cape of South Africa where it has become known as “Elephant food.” Hence their nickname. This plant is one of the best on earth to capt carbon, it absorbs carbon dioxide but does not release it into the air again.
It stores water in its trunk and leaves so it can survive without regular watering. If you sometimes forget to water your houseplants, or you are away from home often, it might be just the right houseplant for you. Yet, they will love watering every 7-10 days! They love sun too.
